With presentations and practical activities in which students from primary and secondary schools from Berovo, Pehchevo and Delchevo took part, May 21 – the European Day of Natura 2000 – was marked today in the “Educational Center for Nature Conservation” in the village of Negrevo (Pehchevo).
During the event, the students made themed dwellings that are part of the biodiversity of the Bregalnica catchment area, through which they got to know the meaning and need for their protection.
Through presentations, professors and teachers from secondary and primary schools, as well as representatives of key interested parties were introduced to the process of establishing Natura 2000 areas. They were also introduced to the goals and activities of Natura 2000 as a network of the European Union for nature protection, which primarily aims to ensure the preservation of natural values from the perspective of habitats, that is, through adequate protection of habitat types, to ensure protection of the entire living world that exists in them.
Natura 2000 European Day has been celebrated since 1992, when the EU Habitats Directive and the LIFE Program were adopted. This Directive, together with the Birds Directive (adopted in 1979), became the basis of this EU nature conservation network. Today, it includes more than 27,800 land and sea sites across the EU member states, and has a major contribution to the preservation of the unique natural heritage.
The European Day for Natura 2000 in Negrevo is organized by the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning of the Republic of North Macedonia, Farmahem, the Macedonian Ecological Society and the Center for the Development of the Eastern Planning Region, as partners of the Program for the Preservation of Nature in North Macedonia – phase 2 (PZP), a project of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
